Painting Supply List

  • Light weight watercolor paper
  • A painting board, either Plexiglas or some other non-absorbent material.
  • Either Stockmar or Cotman (Winsor & Newton) water colors (some of the Cotman color names: Lemon yellow, Cadmium yellow pale, Sap green, Hooker’s green, purple lake)*. Usually I work with a warm and a cool color each of red, yellow, green, blue, and purple, and just one color of orange, brown and gray.
  • Winsor & Newton brushes, Sceptre Gold 19mm (3/4 inch) is the regular size, 13mm (1/2 inch) is the smaller one. Even smaller ones may be needed for more detailed painting.
  • We usually use Shurguard masking tape. This one seems to stay put without ripping the paper off later, but other brands will work too.
  • You can use any easel, or have someone make one on two pieces of 2”x 4” boards with angled cuts in them (ours have one side approximately at 65 degrees and the other at 50).
  • A natural sponge to wet your paper (other sponges tend to shed, but you could try them too)
  • A jar or cup for water (glass works well since you can tell when it needs to be changed and unlike plastic, it cleans well since it doesn’t absorb the paint)
  • It is best to paint in an area that has enough space and is well lit.
  • Have fun!

*Underlined colors are warm colors
